Just stop right now.

It's one of the most common habits, but it's also one of the worst. And not just because it's dirty. Since nails play an important role in protecting your fingers, here's all the reasons you should leave them alone.

1. You run the risk of an infection.

Think about everything you touch all day long — and then all of that going into your mouth. Ewww! Even worse: Harmful bacteria like salmonella and E. coli could be lingering under your nails, just to name a few. And any of that bad stuff could make you sick.

You're also putting yourself at risk for a nasty finger infection. Worst case scenario? Tiny cuts could make your finger swell, or even fill up with pus.

2. It can seriously hurt your teeth.

If you're a chronic nail biter, you can change the shape of your teeth and weaken them. Another downside: It can shift your jaw and affect the way your teeth come together, causing chronic pain over time.

3. It could mean something bigger is at play.

In 2012, the American Psychiatric Association classified nail biting as a form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Though most likely you're bored or stressed, finger biting could be a warning sign for a hidden mental disorder.
