RAILWAY STATION

The word "station" at the average Russian is extremely negative associations. Meanwhile, in many cities around the world train stations are not only valuable public spaces with good restaurants, gardens and even nightclubs, but also works of art. We chose the most interesting of them.





  1. Atocha, Madrid [/ caption]

Atocha is not only the largest but also the oldest train station in Spain. The first station building was built in 1851 by order of Queen Isabella II. After 40 years, the station has experienced a strong fire, was renovated and reopened in 1892. One of the architects of the station building then was none other than Gustave Eiffel, the author of the famous tower in Paris. Exactly 100 years later, in 1992, saw the light of modern Atocha. The building is a two stone pavilions connected by an overlap of glass and iron, which are located under the railway tracks in the amount of 24 pieces. Deserves special attention the old part of the station, which is a botanical garden with more than 7,000 plants, 550 species of animals and birds. Also at the botanical garden is a small pond with fish and turtles. In addition, for the convenience of passengers are focused shops, cafes, and there is even a nightclub.



 2. Station Liège-Guillemins, Liege

The history of this station begins in 1842, seven years after the first railway in Europe. In 1958 it was completely rebuilt by the most modern standards of the time. The station is served in this form until 2009, when, and was commissioned a new building, and which is at stake. 3. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai

Building Indian Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its construction took 10 years. The building was designed by Frederick Stevens and was originally named in honor of Queen Victoria, but was renamed in 1996 in honor of the Indian national hero Chhatrapati Shivaji, a statue of Queen Victoria, is located under the central dome, was dismantled.  4. Station La Gare, Strasbourg

7. Rossio railway station, Lisbon
